In 2008 the Fondazione Giovanni Agnelli planned and carried out an ambitious research programme on the Italian education system (primary and secondary schools), involving more than 30 international experts and including 12 empirical studies devised to gather fresh data and provide solid grounds for new educational policies.
All this turned out in the Rapporto sulla scuola in Italia 2009, published by the Editori Laterza in February and presented in Rome in the presence of the Ministry of Education Mariastella Gelmini.
The conclusions and policy recommendations of the report have given rise to a lively public debate.
The Fondazione Agnelli has now decided to make a selection of the Report available in English, starting with the Introduction by Andrea Gavosto, the Foundation's director, and the last chapter, containing a summary of the research findings as well as a number of recommendations to policy makers.
