The new “Rapporto sulla scuola in Italia 2010” was published by the Editori Laterza in March and was presented in Rome in the presence of the Ministry of Education Mariastella Gelmini.
The Report addresses a number of issues on the divides affecting the Italian school system: (i) the digital divide that makes teachers in Italy less favorably inclined to introduce ICT-supported didactics in everyday school practice than their European counterparts; and, even more important, (ii) the deep geographical divides in equity, efficiency and teaching quality that negatively impact on students’ performances in different regions.
While pointing out that future educational federalism in Italy does entail a risk of making geographical gaps even wider, the Report suggests, however, that it might also be a good chance for improving students’ achievements and abating the drop-out rate, especially in those regions of Southern Italy which presently lag well behind the international average.
The Fondazione Agnelli has now decided to make the Executive Summary written by Andrea Gavosto, the Foundation's Director, available in English.
